Kampala, May 24, 2023: The race for Oyam North MP by-election is taking shape after the electrical commission released the road map last week.
In the road map, voters will elect another MP to succeed Col. Rtd. Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo after he was gunned down on May 2.
Macodwogo is widely expected to be replaced by his son, Engola Okello Samuel.
Okello is, however, facing a big task as he must first be nominated by the NRM party to carry the flag. More than five are in the race for the party primary election.
Wednesday, May 24, UPC announced the nomination of Dr Apio Eunice as its party candidate.
“On 17th May 2023, the Party informed members and the general public that UPC shall participate in Oyam County North by-election following the release of the road map by Electoral Commission and promised to update the membership as well as the people of Oyam North about the outcome of internal arrangements to produce the flag bearer,” party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon said.
“UPC is pleased to inform the public especially the electoral base in Oyam County North that the Party held a successful Constituency Conference in the said county and agreed by consensus to present Dr. Apio Eunice as the UPC flag bearer in the forthcoming by-election after the stepping down of Hon. Krispus Ayena Odongo for his comrade (Eunice).
“In a special way, we want to thank Hon. Ayena for exhibiting the spirit of togetherness and putting the interests of the Party first before self. UPC also appreciates the Lango sub-regional leadership, Party leaders in Oyam District and members of Oyam North for embracing unity purposely to go into the by-election as one solid congress force.
Dr Apio Eunice won the UPC flag in the 2020 party primaries of that electoral area where she participated with Hon. Krispus Ayena Odongo and Dr Henry Oboke Edonga, and represented the party in the 2021 general elections for Member of Parliament.
In that election, Arach recalled that the NRM candidate late Okello Charles Engola was declared the winner with 22,895 votes, and the UPC candidate Dr Apio Eunice emerged second with 17,114 votes.
Ayena who stood as an independent got 8,498 votes, Dr Oboke (Ind) 175 votes and Nam Joel (Ind) 140 votes.
“The above statistics are a clear indication that UPC is strong on the ground and was set to win Oyam North in the 2021 General Elections had it not been the division of votes amongst members who contested against each other. Now that our people have reconciled, and embraced unity, UPC is set to reclaim its seat of Oyam County North Member of Parliament.
“As we wait for nominations by Electoral Commission on 19th and 20th June 2023, UPC strongly encourages party members and all electorates in Oyam North to ensure that they participate in all electoral activities ahead of the by-election on 6th July 2023.
“The party equally urges all the supporters and sympathizers of both the party and Dr Apio Eunice to effectively join the crusade and ensure UPC victory.
“We trust that Dr Apio Eunice from the Congress family, will diligently serve the people of Oyam as she is tested from her community service in the same area, and electing her as a Member of Parliament would provide better service delivery in Oyam County North,” Arach stated.
