Kwera youth oilseed farmers elect new cooperative leaders

Kwera Youth Oil Seed Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited has elected new leaders who will operate the cooperative for the next four years.

The development took place during the annual general meeting (AGM) held at Abuli village in Kwera sub-county headquarters, Dokolo South, Dokolo district.

Community Development Officer of Kwera sub-county, Emmanuel Nam, while presiding over the elections, declared Dilison Ocen as chairperson. Nam was unopposed.

Among the elected leaders were vice chairperson Oscar Otum with 109 votes, general secretary Hagard Olum with 68 votes, treasurer Docus Adur with 97 votes, publicity secretary Pule Emmanuel with 73 votes, and women representative Mary Angwech with 68 votes.

The elected board members include Delish Apili, Bonny Okello, and Bonny Tali, while the supervisory committee members are Atoo David Mark, Fatuma Amongi, and Monica Adongo.

Chairperson Dilison pledged to ensure good accountability, transparency, and prioritized welfare for all in his new leadership term.

David Adim Awany, the LC3 chairperson of Kwera sub-county, said cooperatives have boosted rural household incomes and stabilized agricultural product prices. He encouraged farmers to embrace cooperatives to reduce the challenge of low prices imposed by middlemen in the market.

Adim Awany also appealed to the elected leaders to commit themselves to work with transparency, trustworthiness, and accountability.

Francis Ogwal Nam, the secretary for production, community-based services, and natural resources, urged the community to focus on agricultural productivity to reduce unemployment among the youth.

He further appealed to the new leaders to embrace unity, togetherness, and adherence to cooperative constitutions for sustainable growth.

The branch manager of DFCU Bank in Dokolo, Melech Asianza Ovua, encouraged farmers to embrace banking services for resource safety. He added that the bank provides quick loans and is supporting cooperatives by purchasing equipment such as tractors.

Kwera Youth Oil Seed Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited has empowered over 5,000 farmers in sustainable agribusiness as a solution to poverty reduction.

The cooperative was formed in 2019 and officially registered with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives on September 7, 2019.
