On Thursday, April 6, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs Mary Goretti Kitutu appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo alongside his brother Michael Kitutu.

Minister Kitutu, a ringleader in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal has been left alone after dozens of his senior colleagues in government have been left untouched.

Last month, the minister allegedly diverted and shared thousands of iron sheets meant for the Karamoja sub-region with herself, her family, and ministers, including the Vice President, Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and Speaker of Parliament, among other high-profile government officials.

She would later be probed by a Parliamentary committee and handed her over to the Police for more investigations and possible prosecution.

After ‘admitting her mistake’ weeks ago, Kitutu, unlike some fortunate public servants, saw her woes rising each day. She and her brother have been charged with corruption, conspiracy to defraud the government, and causing loss of public property.

Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro of the Anti-Corruption Court after reading charges against the suspects remanded them to Luzira Prison until after Easter, April 12.

Kitutu pleaded not guilty to any of the charges.

Bail

Kitutu’s bail request flopped after the presiding Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro said she needed more time to scrutinize the bail documents.
