Raisedon Zenenga, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, praised UPDF troops serving in Somalia as part of the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU).
According to Raisedon, the troops have restored Uganda’s distinguished reputation and increased confidence among UN staff.
“UNGU X has carried out its duties with professionalism and dedication. Their efforts in protecting the UN in Mogadishu have enabled the organisation to achieve its mandate by providing a secure and enabling environment,” Zenenga said.
Speaking to the troops during the change of command of the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU X) in Mogadishu, Zenenga praised their dedication, emphasizing that Uganda should be proud of their service and reaffirming the UN’s deep appreciation for their commitment.
Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye took over command from Lt Col David Emmanuel Odong, who had served a one-year tour of duty.
Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, Force Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), reminded the troops that their mission was to provide security for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Support Office in Somalia. 
Lt Gen Kavuma praised Lt Col Odong’s leadership in protecting communities, securing critical infrastructure, and fostering trust in Somalia.
He urged the incoming commander, Lt Col Barigye, to uphold the high standards established by his predecessor, emphasizing that leadership is about unity, collaboration, and leading by example.
Lt Gen Kavuma acknowledged the Somali people’s resilience, the troops’ dedication, and international support.
He emphasized that, while Somalia’s path to stability is difficult, it is possible with courage, integrity, and respect for humanity.
Lt Col Odong expressed his appreciation to the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve in UNGU and contribute to peacekeeping operations.
Meanwhile, Lt Col Barigye has pledged to build on his predecessor’s achievements, thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the role, and committed to working closely with UN partners to carryout the unit is mandate.
