The best certificate in nursing student in the region was Castro Acol who scored a GPA of 5.0.
Lira – January 19, 2022: Two years ago, Lira school of health sciences started as a humble academic institution offering a wide range of medical courses.
Possibly, no one knew it would become an academic giant within a short period, even amid the lethal hands of the Cocid-19 pandemic.
One can choose to trek or drive for only one and a half kilometres from Lira City centre to Angwetangwet where the health institute can be found.
Established in 2020, Lira school of health sciences started with 29 students, but just like any other academic institution, it suffered from the brutal and sharp teeth of Covid-19 that saw government close all schools across the country.
At the time of mandatory closure, it closed with 13 students.
But there is an aura of joy and excitement at the institute and the community of Angwetangwet following the release of last year’s examination results by the Uganda National Medical Examinations Board (UNMED).
The results indicate that Lira school of health sciences produced the best students in the Northern region.
Institute principal, Denis Odyek said out of 13 candidates that sat for year one semester one examination, two candidates got distinctions and the rest got credits.

The best certificate in nursing student in the region was Castro Acol who scored a GPA of 5.0.
Her results have broken down as: Paper 1: 88% (5.0), Paper 2: 86% (5.0), Paper 3: 80% (5.0) Paper 4: 84% (5.0) (GPA. 5.0).
Acol’s next challenger was Nancy Akullo who scored 92% in Paper 1 (5.0), Paper 2: 84% (5.0), Paper 3: 80% (5.0) and Paper 4: 77% (4.5) with a total (GPA 4.88).
The 29 students who initially joined the institute were from Acholi, Busoga, Teso and Lango sub-regions but due to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, only 13 students managed to return when the government partially opened up academic institutions offering medical courses.
Lira school of health sciences is currently running academic programs which include Certificate in Nursing, Certificate in Midwifery, Certificate in Public Health and Certificate in Medical Records.
“This excellent results give us courage and hope that we shall achieve our vision of becoming the leading institution offering medical programs in the region,” Denis Odyek, the school’s principal told TND News Frank Oyugi in Lira City.
