Oyam—17, December 2021: Kayunga district LC5 chairperson by-election has produced controversial debates from different political groups after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate won the Thursday hot exercise.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) was in charge of the district following their victory in the 2021 general elections, which saw their candidate, now deceased, Ffefeka Sserubogo, winning the seat.
After his death, the 28-year-old vice chairperson, Joel Kayiira, took over the district political affairs in July.
By-election
The seat was contested for by the NRM’s Muwonge Andrew, NUP’s Harriet Nakawedde. Others in the race were Kamoga Jamilu (independent), Musisi Boniface Bandikubi (Independent), Nyanzi Majid (Independent) and Waddimba Anthony (DP).
On Thursday evening, for example, some initial results showed both Muwonge and Nakawedde were tightly racing. The latter got 141 from Kyampisi Central polling station [N-Z] while Muwonge got only 69.
The preliminary results from other polling stations were equally favoring NUP and, to them, all was over. Several NUP principals went on social media, expressing good news with huge elations.
As they say “never laugh until you see food on your table”, NRM were full of activity, they were waiting for the electoral commission (EC) to make the last announcement, and finally, they are in joy.
According to the last results announced by Kyobutungi Jennifer, the Returning Officer for Kayunga Electoral District on Friday at 8:57am, Mwonge garnered 31,830 against Nakawedde’s 31,308 votes.

NUP rejects results
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has rejected the by-election outcomes, blaming President Museveni for the loss.
“In broad day light, Museveni robs the victory of the people, and declares his candidate in Kayunga! Despite the stuffing and all manner of rigging, the signed DR forms give us a 15,000 votes lead. Ugandans will have to decide the next course of actions.”
