Soroti City – July 16, 2022: The chairperson LCV of Nabilatuk district Paul Lokol has revealed that the district authorities are not anywhere talking about the Parish Development Model (PDM) because of the hunger situation attacking the Karamoja sub-region.

Addressing the press Lokol disclosed that PDM is not “a priority discussion at this point”. Although registration is ongoing at households; Lokol says people think they are being registered for food relief.

He says PDM talk is halted as matters of hunger and insecurity dominate until the food is distributed to his people.

“Every morning I receive people at my home begging for food, even some you can’t believe and there’s a massive movement of people from villages to town seeking for what to eat,” the district chairperson added.

Although no cases of death are reported in the district, Lokol states that the situation is “worrying” and begs the government should intervene.

The leader also intimates that giving shs100 million to a hunger-stricken community will not perform miracles because residents will strive for survival first.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja last week pronounced that the government has allocated shs135 billion to address the food crisis in Karamoja that has claimed the lives of dozens of people due to famine

Lokol, however, attributes the famine situation to insecurity which left many traders that used to deliver foodstuffs and buy commodities to flee the region.

He says the Karamojong are resilient people surviving on their livestock and for many years crops have been failing but the situation never escalated to this point.

Lokol also alleges that the situation has led to a decline in livestock prices as animals that used to sell at shs2 million are now sold at shs300, 000.

He says this is because both the buyer and the seller are in fear of trading for their lives

Speaking on claims that Uganda is already in the middle-income status, the district boss trashes reports that Uganda has attained middle-income status when a majority of people still live below the poverty line.

“We cannot say Uganda has achieved the middle-income status when children and mothers in Karamoja sleep hungry.”

The chairperson tasked the government with delivering food relief to address the problem of insecurity which has scared people away from Karamoja.
