During the festive season, seven drivers got killed and sixteen seriously injured in fatal road crashes.
Oyam – 27, December 2021: The Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has released statistics showing several crashes pre, during and post-Christmas.
ASP Nampiima Faridah is the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate. She released the report on December 27.
The report shows 3,070 traffic offenders were arrested and issued Express Penalty Scheme (EPS) tickets on various traffic offences at different checkpoints in the whole country from December 23 to 26.
Of the figures above, 644 got arrested for reckless driving, 422 for driving vehicles in the Dangerous Mechanical Conditions (DMCs) state, 234 had invalid driving licenses, 164 for speeding, and 157 for not wearing seatbelts.
A total of 195 road crashes occurred during the festive season (23 to 26 December) 2021. Out of these 51, were fatal, 93 were serious, and 51 were minor.

Nampiima adds that 248 road crashes were recorded during the festive season, and out of these, 58 persons died, and 190 sustained injuries.
During the festive season, seven drivers got killed and sixteen seriously injured. Seventeen motorcyclists died, and 47 were seriously injured.
The reports further show that thirteen pedestrians died, and 35 sustained serious injuries.
Distribution
Kampala Metropolitan Area (KMP) had 10 fatalities, 49 serious cases and 36 minor cases. Upcountry registered 41 fatalities, 44 serious injuries and 15 were minor.
Warning
“We remind all road users to be vigilant while using the roads and drivers to avoid reckless driving since it’s the major cause of fatalities on our roads,” PRO traffic and road safety.
