Breaking: Two stolen UNHCR vehicles from Koboko recovered

A Police detective says “an interesting operation was mounted and coordinated” by the Deputy Director General ISO for West Nile and East Congo, Gen. Taban Amin.


Koboko – 21, December 2021: Security team from West Nile sub-region managed to track and recover two stolen vehicles on Tuesday.

Charles Twiine, Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Uganda Police confirms to TND News, Tuesday evening.

The vehicles belong to the UN humanitarian agency, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to Twiine, the vehicles were “stolen from Koboko and tracked to DRC” from where they were recovered in Aruu [DRC] in a time interval of eight hours.

“Effort to apprehend the suspects who are both Ugandans and Congolese continue,” Twiine adds.

Asked about Police preliminary investigations, he says, “It has been a spate of robberies in the region involving motorcycles.”

“This incident happened with connivance with Saracen security officers who even abandoned their guns and to date they are still on run.”

What really happened?

TND News understands that on the night of 14th/15th December, 2021, the offices of UNHCR at Mindreba village along Yumbe Road was broken into. The offices are manned by Aird and guarded by Saracen (U) LTD guards.

That night, CCTV cameras were vandalized and two high-value-Toyota Land Cruiser double cabin and an ambulance Reg. No. UBE 496 B and UBK 403 M were stolen, respectively from the parking yard.

Exclusive information also reveals thugs vandalized another vehicle same night and left it at the yard.

A criminal case would later be registered at Koboko Central Police Station vide CRB 1396/2021 for “office breaking and stealing vehicles”.
