Skimpy PWDs funding angers FDC MP, Alobo

Soroti—25, November 2021: Soroti City West division funding for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has angered the vice chairperson Teso Parliamentary Group (TPG) and Woman Member of Parliament Soroti city, Joan Alobo.

Alobo was shocked after the division authorities revealed to her the central government’s allocation to the PWDs sector is only shs800, 000.

She was stunned while delivering a donation of 20 tri-cycle wheel chairs to the PDWs in the City.

The FDC stalwart reacted, and vowed to approach the Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development for funding once she returns to Parliament.

The Woman MP feels worried with many challenges PDWs are facing. She described the allocation to the city division “a laughter”.

Bitter Alobo says government cannot allocate money equivalent to buying one wheelchair and boasts that it has funded a sector.

Soroti City has over 100 registered persons with disabilities but 58 of them direly need wheelchairs.

Upon giving out the wheelchairs, she pledged to source for resources to ensure that the 38 PWDs also get access to mobility.

Peter Patrick Emaru is the Mayor Soroti City West Division. He says the division is “handcuffed” to start “appropriating little funding versus the weight of challenges befalling PWDs.”

Robert Ekomu, one beneficiary criticize government for paying less attention to the disabled and yet they are dwelling in poverty.

Joan Ameso claims that PWDs are taken as a last resort in many programs that will benefit citizens.

She states that programs like education, health and social economic projects come for the disabled when other people have already benefited.

She further stressed, “Stigma, shortage of transport means, undermining is among the serious challenges affecting us.”

“I appeal to government to establish self-sustaining projects like livestock, grants among many to help us,” she appealed.
