Gulu—31, August 2021: Over 4,816 youth from the districts of Gulu, Nwoya, Amuru, Omoro, Yumbe, Koboko, Moyo, Adjumani, Obongi, Zombo, Arua, Maracha, Terego and Madi–Okollo have submitted their applications to join Local Defense Unit (LDU) under the Uganda Peoples’ Defense Force (UPDF).

Lieutenant Hassan Ahmed Kato, the UPDF 4th Division Spokesperson, says youth has actively taken part in the just concluded exercise, which shows their commitment and need for jobs within the country.

Kato added that though the UPDF needs only one thousand and four persons to join the force from both the Acholi and West Nile sub regions, over 4000 applicants have responded.

“Over 100 applicants were female youth,” he adds.

He further disclosed that 666 applicants were from Gulu, 213 from Amuru, 242 from Omoro, 227 from Nwoya; 361 from Yumbe, 127 from Koboko, 215 from Moyo, 299 from Adjumani, 66 from Obongi; 257 from Zombo, 654 from Arua, 430 from Maracha, 430 from Terego, and 314 from Madi–Okollo districts, respectively.

“West Nile sub region has registered a larger number of applicants compared to West Acholi majorly because of the numbers of districts,” Kato tells TND News reporter.

He also confirmed that the recruitment teams did not register any person with fake documents and there were no cases of impersonation reported during the exercise.

Countrywide, the UPDF says she will recruit 10,000 LDUs to serve the country.
