EFOTI applauds Northern Uganda tea farmers
Gulu – 21, August 2021: Over 800 farmers have registered to undertake commercial tea growing in Northern Uganda region, with more than hundreds expected to register before the end of 2021.
Region’s districts of Zombo, Nwoya, Gulu, Adjumani, Arua have welcomed tea farming. Kiryandongo district has since joined.
Currently, rising of tea bursary beds, building capacity of farmers, among other technical support are taking place.
The Edwin Foundation Tea Initiative (EFOTI) is a private company with expertise in tea and fruits farming, tea research, marketing and value addition. EFOTI has for the last three years camped in Northern Uganda, with different stakeholders’ blessings to revamp tea project.
In making tea project a success in the region, EFOTI has signed a Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with several institutions—among them Gulu university, Prime SAACO, Zombo Tea Out-growers Cooperative Society, Ker Kwaro Acholi, Alur Kingdom, among other stakeholders.
Edwin Atukunda Bekunda is the EFOTI Director. “Tea is growing well in the region, nurseries are already being raised within; farmers have shown interest, and institutions have signed MoUs showing interest is serious tea commercial farming,” he said.
“We call upon other stakeholders to join us for this development,” Atukunda adds.
Atukunda says farmers and all stakeholders in the region have made a right decision to embrace tea and support EFOTI.
“We can’t thank them enough. Whereas there are some challenges, we are indebted to all the farmers who have welcomed us; we are saying let’s push more—ahead.”
“It’s coming and we are all waiting. It will create hundreds of jobs,” he adds.
Recently, Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) extended her partnership with EFOTI, allowing the latter to use its prison farms across the country. Read more: Uganda Prisons Service
