Kabale—30, August 30, 2020: With less than seven months to the 2021 general elections, aspirants for different elective positions are luring voters to give them the political mandate.

With the presence of a novel coronavirus in Uganda and globally, mass campaigns have been restricted by the electoral body and politicians have been advised to use available media platforms to reach out to their voters and sympathizers.

Recently, Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) party announced that they will not field a candidate for presidency.

Jimmy Akena, UPC party leader, says the party needs to have more representation in parliament, like it has happened in lower government elections held nearly a fortnight ago.

In accomplishing such a dream, TND News interviewed Nahabwe Viola, a UPC member who’s vying for MP, Kabale Municipality.

“I’m married, a mother of two young boys. I hail from Kigezi highlands, specifically Kabale district, South-Western Uganda. I’m a teacher by profession and currently a tutor at Ntungamo Primary Teachers College, a private institution owned by Ntungamo District Local Government,” she shared her background with this digital publication.

Ms Nahabwe says she also a chairperson Smile Hope Africa, a community-based organization operating in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality and in the entire South-Western Uganda.

“My core mission is to address holistic needs for young children and women. With my experience as a vulnerable young mother and a mother to so many children, I’m a witness to extreme suffering of children. I need to be in parliament to change the Laws on child protection so they are more effective,” she added.

For example, she says “a penalty of aggravated child defilement by a parent is death but no child can report their parent because without them they cannot be fed or educated, hence endless spiral of suffering”.

“My second core mission is to advocate for domestic violence Law or amendment for providing sheltered services for abused women, which will also promote criminal punishment for child marriages.”

She argues that this will protect young women who get married so early and end up being trapped into domestic and cultural violence without an outlet supported by women’s initiatives.

“Women will also be skilled up to take part in mainstream professional activities so that they can have improved income,” she pledges.

Quoting Transparency International, she says Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) was ranked as the most corrupt tax body in East Africa.

“URA officials are increasingly demanding for bribes from businessmen and women, a situation that has contributed less to the growth of upcoming young entrepreneurs. I pledge to be the voice to the voiceless Ugandans if elected to parliament of Uganda 2021-2026.”
