Meeting Museveni on Lango cattle compensation sparks disagreement

Cattle compensation drama has kicked off in Lango sub-region less than a month after President Yoweri Museveni had a meeting with local leaders regarding cattle compensation.

President Museveni addressed Lango at Lango College playground on August 17 where he directed that a group of up to 20 members be constituted for more cattle compensation talks with him at State House.

While some leaders like Otuke East MP Julius Acon Bua offered himself to coordinate the delegation, no substantial names came up immediately.

However, days or a week after, some names were reportedly generated. This move has irked regional coordinator for the Lango War Claimants, Sam Obua, who on Wednesday publicly demanded a full and transparent list of names.

While meeting a section of claimants and leaders at Kumar Hotel in Lira City on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Obua claimed that Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng and Otuke East MP Julius Acon Bua created their own lists and submitted them to the State House.

He also claimed that MP Acon introduced segregation and confusion into the process of developing the list for the Lango War Claimants (LWC).

Another consultative meeting to find a middle ground has been scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025.

Coordinator Obua further claimed that the two MPs delivered a pre-compiled list of “illegal” individuals to meet President Museveni at the State House to discuss the cattle compensation matter.

Obua emphasized that the Lango War Claimants is independent and condemned what he termed as “political interference in the compensation process.”

In a proposed resolution, the Hotel Kumar meeting attendees demanded that Minister Aceng must explain why she submitted certain names to the State House, without consulting them.

MP Acon is also being demanded to explain why he generated the list.

The committee resolved to task the Attorney General to look into the matter. “We shall generate the rightful list where everyone is embodied because the list that Dr. Jane and MP Acon submitted contains ghost people.”

Some of the claimants who attended the meeting have asked MP Acon to use the media to clarify his official position on the matter.

Onyekho Godfrey, a senior advisor for the Lango War Claimants Association, urged all leaders involved to set aside political, religious, and cultural differences to focus on the common issue at hand.

MP Acon on Wednesday rejected the allegation of submitting the list to the State House.

Kole North MP, Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti read Lango’s joint memorandum August 17. He told tndNews that the scheduled Saturday meeting is crucial for reconciling the two parties.

He cited the need for Lango to present a unified voice.

“We expect to meet President Museveni on the matter soon for a final resolution,” Dr. Opio, who doubles as general secretary of LPG, said.
