Eleven academically outstanding students from Lamwo district have secured State House scholarships to pursue science-related degree programmes at various universities across Uganda.
The scholarships, awarded under a presidential initiative aimed at strengthening Uganda’s science and technology workforce, target students admitted to priority science programmes that are considered critical to the country’s socio-economic transformation.
Lamwo district LC5 chairperson Oyet Sisto Ocen, said the beneficiaries were selected strictly on merit in accordance with State House scholarship guidelines, which give priority to students admitted to science disciplines.
“The scholarship was awarded strictly on merit as guided by the State House criteria. It targets students who have been admitted to pursue science courses at university,” Oyet said.
He explained that the programme is intended to produce professionals in fields that are essential to national development, including medicine, engineering, agriculture, information technology and other science-based disciplines.
Among the beneficiaries is Rubangakene Jonathan from Padibe town council, who will pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Gulu University. Rubangakene Christopher from Agoro sub-county will study Bachelor of Agriculture and Rural Innovation at St. Peter’s University, while Alanyo Barbra Peace from Madi-opei town council has been admitted to Busitema University to pursue Mechanical Engineering.
Other beneficiaries include Akumu Esther from Palabek Gem sub-county, who will study Electrical Engineering at Busitema University; Auma Benedicto from Madi Opei sub-county, who will pursue Information Technology at Busitema University; and Akech Brenda from Madi-opei town council, who has been admitted to study Agriculture.
The remaining beneficiaries are Okello Collins from Padibe West sub-county, who will pursue Information Technology at Gulu University; Odong David from Agoro dub-county, who will study Agriculture at Busitema University; Komakech Innocent from Palabek Ogili sub-county, admitted to Makerere University for Civil Engineering.
Lamunu Sharon from Padibe town council, who will pursue Nursing Science at Muni University; and Okot Brian from Lokung sub-county, who will study Computer Science at Gulu University.
According to district leaders, the scholarships represent one of the largest batches of State House-sponsored students from Lamwo in recent years, and reflect the growing number of learners from the district qualifying for competitive higher education opportunities.
Oyet described the programme as a major investment in the future of the district, noting that many bright students from rural communities often fail to continue with university education because of financial constraints.
“This is a very good initiative by His Excellency the President. It has increased the number of children from Lamwo joining university through government support,” he said.
He added that before the latest State House awards, six other students from Lamwo had already secured admission to public universities under the district quota system.
With the additional eleven scholarship recipients, the number of students from the district accessing government-supported university education has increased significantly this academic year.
Banabas Langoya, the Lamwo district Education Officer, says expanding access to science education is vital for addressing the shortage of professionals in sectors such as healthcare, engineering, agriculture and information technology, particularly in rural districts where skilled personnel remain limited.
Lamwo Resident District Commissioner William Komakech welcomed the scholarship programme, describing it as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to investing in Uganda’s human capital.
He said empowering young people through higher education not only transforms individual lives but also contributes to the social and economic development of communities by producing professionals capable of addressing local and national challenges.
District leaders expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for extending the scholarship opportunity to deserving students from Lamwo and pledged continued support for initiatives that improve access to quality education.
They also urged the beneficiaries to remain disciplined, work hard throughout their studies and use the opportunity to acquire skills that will contribute to the development of Lamwo district and Uganda.
For many families across the district, the scholarships represent more than financial assistance.
They are a gateway to opportunities that were previously beyond reach and a source of hope that education can transform lives, strengthen communities and produce the next generation of doctors, engineers, agricultural experts and technology professionals needed to drive the country’s future development.
