The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has dismissed reports that its leaders are negotiating with Gen. Salim Saleh over the release of detained opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye.

Harold Kaija, PFF’s deputy chief of cabinet for policy and communication, said the party has no instructions from Besigye to engage in such negotiations.

In a statement to party members on Tuesday, Kaija rejected a newspaper report claiming that talks involving Saleh and PFF leaders had reached an advanced stage.Kaija described the report as completely false, saying no senior PFF leader has been able to consult Besigye since he reportedly collapsed during a court appearance on July 29, 2026.

He said the party therefore cannot enter into negotiations concerning Besigye without receiving instructions from him.The reports followed claims that Saleh was coordinating an initiative involving political figures and other prominent individuals aimed at securing Besigye’s release as his treason case continues.

PFF said it would instead continue pursuing Besigye’s release through the courts, noting that he has been denied bail on four occasions. The party also rejected suggestions that Besigye should seek forgiveness, saying his case should be handled through the judicial process.

Besigye has been detained since November 2024 after he and his aide, Obeid Lutale, were taken from Nairobi to Uganda in circumstances their lawyers described as an abduction.
