Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has sparked heated debate after revealing that his company operates more than 10,000 boda bodas, prompting Ugandans to speculate about the business’s potential earnings and investment value.
Tayebwa made the revelation while explaining how digital payment systems have improved the collection of instalments from riders acquiring motorcycles through his company, Tayari Rides. He said cashless payments had reduced delays and made it easier to track payments.Based on Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala, Tayari Rides finances motorcycle purchases and provides mobility and logistics solutions, including electric motorcycles through partnerships with electric mobility companies such as Spiro.
The revelation has attracted mixed reactions, with some social media users questioning the business interests of senior government officials amid Kampala’s growing traffic congestion. Others have attempted to calculate the company’s potential earnings. One commenter estimated that collecting Shs10,000 daily from each of the 10,000 motorcycles could generate Shs100 million per day.
