Ugandans who depend on charcoal for cooking and earning a living could face uncertainty following a warning attributed to the Uganda Police over the burning, selling, transportation and use of charcoal across the country.

The warning has raised concerns among charcoal dealers, transporters and ordinary households that rely on charcoal as an affordable source of energy. For many families, charcoal remains a common cooking fuel, while others depend on its sale to support their livelihoods.

During a press briefing, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke reportedly warned that people found engaging in prohibited charcoal-related activities could be arrested and taken to court. The announcement has drawn attention to the potential consequences for people involved at different stages of the charcoal trade.

According to the statement, even people transporting small quantities of charcoal could face enforcement action if they are found violating the applicable restrictions. The briefing reportedly referred to a sack of charcoal being carried in a vehicle, on a bicycle or on a motorcycle without the required permission.

The warning has also raised questions among charcoal users who may not be directly involved in commercial sales but depend on the fuel for everyday cooking. Households with limited access to affordable alternatives could be particularly concerned about how they will meet their daily energy needs.

Police reportedly linked the directive to an earlier presidential decision aimed at protecting the environment and reducing widespread deforestation. Charcoal production can contribute to forest loss when trees are cut down faster than they can naturally regenerate or be replanted.

Ugandans have consequently been encouraged to consider alternative cooking methods, including gas and electricity, as well as other modern energy options. However, switching fuels can be challenging for households and small businesses that face high initial equipment costs or limited access to reliable electricity. As the warning circulates, charcoal dealers, transporters and consumers will be looking for clear information about the precise restrictions, any required permits and how enforcement will be carried out. The specific legal provisions and scope of the directive should be confirmed through official government or police communication before people draw conclusions about every charcoal-related activity.
