Fresh concerns have emerged over the planned compensation of traders affected by floods in Kampala after a group of traders called on the government to suspend payments until disputed beneficiary lists are reviewed.
The traders, operating under the Uganda National Traders Association (UNATA) Kampala and the Nakivubo Agro Dealers Association, have raised concerns over missing names, disputed registration figures and suspected ghost beneficiaries.
Their petition has put the focus on how the traders were identified and how the compensation funds will be distributed.
Led by UNATA president Godfrey Katongole, the group has petitioned Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, asking the government to review lists submitted by different associations and government institutions before releasing the money.
According to the traders, more than 100 members affiliated with the two associations were left off the compensation list despite submitting their details to the relevant authorities.
They want the government to establish why the names were excluded and ensure that all eligible traders are considered.
Katongole has also called on the Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, to intervene in the matter. He wants the minister to help establish the actual number of traders affected by the floods and identify individuals who may have been included on the list without meeting the requirements.
The process reportedly involves several institutions, including Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the Office of the Prime Minister and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), alongside traders’ associations that submitted their own lists of affected members.

The dispute has also drawn attention to John Kabanda and the handling of the compensation process. However, the claims surrounding the disagreement over the money and the responsibilities of the different leaders would require confirmation from the parties involved.
The traders want the government to address the disputed figures and missing names before any payments are made. They say reviewing the lists could help prevent eligible beneficiaries from being left out and reduce the risk of money going to people who do not qualify for compensation.
