The children of Tooro’s king-elect Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I and his wife Rebecca Amoding may not automatically qualify for the throne because of their mother’s clan background, according to Babiito Clan spokesman Rev. Fr. Dr Charles Oyo.Oyo explained that although Amoding will retain her official position as queen, marrying the incoming Omukama does not automatically make her a member of a Tooro clan.

He said maternal clan identity remains an important consideration in determining eligibility for succession within Tooro’s traditional system.“She will be like any other wife of the king,” Oyo said during a press conference in Kampala.According to Oyo, a potential heir must be born to a mother belonging to one of the recognised clans of Tooro, raising questions about the future succession status of any children born to Nyabongo I and Amoding, who is of Iteso origin.Oyo also rejected suggestions that Amoding would have to be adopted into a Tooro clan for her marriage to the king to be recognised.

He said people from outside Tooro can undergo cultural initiation, but such processes have limitations when it comes to royal succession.The clarification comes as Tooro prepares for Nyabongo I’s coronation on September 29 at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City. The Babiito Royal Clan selected him to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, with the Rukurato later endorsing the decision.Oyo also explained that the Queen Mother’s official palace role changes following the death of her son, meaning the late King Oyo’s mother no longer holds the same official position under the new reign.

The succession transition has also been accompanied by questions surrounding a reported biological son of the late King Oyo and whether he could have a place in the royal succession.
