President Yoweri Museveni has expressed confidence that he will still be alive and actively following national affairs when the Anglican Church in Ankole celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2036.

Museveni made the remarks during the closing ceremony of the movement’s 90th anniversary celebrations held at St James Cathedral, Ruharo, in Mbarara City.

Addressing the congregation, the President said he believed he would still be around to join Ugandans in marking the historic milestone.

“I think I will still be around in 2036, and I will be with you,” Museveni said.

The President, who is set to turn 82 years old in September, attributed his long life and good health to God’s blessing.

Museveni reflected on his long connection with the cathedral grounds, recalling that he first visited the area 77 years ago during celebrations marking 50 years of the Anglican Church in Ankole.

He said it was remarkable that after many decades, he was still alive and able to return to the same place.

“I was here 77 years ago and I am still around. Praise be to God,” he told the gathering.

Museveni also shared personal memories from his childhood and his family’s connection to the Anglican Church.

He recalled that his sister Violet Kajubiri was named after the Anglican Church’s jubilee celebrations held in 1949.

The President used the occasion to highlight the importance of faith, history and the role of religious institutions in shaping society.

His comments about living until 2036 come after previous remarks in which he suggested that he could live to celebrate his 100th birthday.

During a Parish Development Model tour in Greater Mubende in 2025, Museveni said his daughters believed he had a good chance of reaching the age of 100.

He said his lifestyle choices had contributed to his longevity, including avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, eating traditional foods and staying physically active.

Museveni has often spoken about the importance of maintaining discipline and healthy habits as key factors in living a long life.

The President’s remarks attracted attention from members of the public, with many discussing his optimism about the future.

The five-day revival convention brought together thousands of delegates from across East Africa under the theme focusing on the enduring message of Jesus Christ.

During the event, Museveni praised church leaders for preserving the legacy of the East African Revival, which has had a major influence on religious and social life in the region.

He also welcomed a proposal to establish an East African Revival Museum, saying it would help preserve history and promote tourism.

The President’s statement about being present in 2036 has renewed conversations about his health, longevity and his continued role in Uganda’s future leadership.

As Ugandans look ahead to the coming years, Museveni’s remarks reflect his confidence that he will remain part of the country’s journey for many more years.
