World Health Organisation (WHO) Uganda says evidence shows that stronger tobacco taxes are among the most effective tools to reduce tobacco use, prevent disease and increase domestic revenue.
In a brief report shared on August 4, WHO Uganda reveals that tobacco use claims more than 5,000 lives annually in Uganda.
The health agency adds that tobacco costs the country over shs449 billion in health and economic losses each year.
On Tuesday, WHO Uganda joined the government of Uganda and stakeholders at a high-level breakfast meeting to disseminate a new Tobacco Tax Policy Review and Modelling (TTPR&M) report.
The review is supported by Gates Foundation through Word Health Organisation, and outlines practical reforms to strengthen public health and domestic resource mobilisation.
In 2025, Uganda’s tobacco exports remained a minor non-traditional agricultural export compared to dominant commodities like gold and coffee.
It had a monthly export values generally fluctuating between US$ 1 million and US$ 9 million amidst intense regional competition and a local surge in illicit cigarette trade, according to the Ministry of Finance.
