Tension, chaos, and dramatic scenes marked the LC1 elections in Bar-Opok village, Inomo sub-county, Kwania district, as voters finally went to the poll on August 1 after an earlier failed attempt on July 28.
The initial election exercise was reportedly disorganised, with accusations directed at supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), forcing authorities to halt the process and reschedule the vote.
In the rescheduled election, residents turned up in significant numbers, determined to exercise their democratic right. However, the process was once again overshadowed by violence and disorder during the vote-counting stage.
Suspected NRM supporters stormed the tallying area, forcefully grabbed the official voters’ register, and destroyed it in an attempt to disrupt the process.
The incident triggered panic among voters and election officials, plunging the exercise into confusion.
Security personnel, who had been deployed to maintain order, were compelled to intervene. Police officers fired bullets into the air to disperse the rowdy crowd and restore calm at the scene.
Despite the disruption, election officials proceeded with the process and declared Denis Oloi, a candidate aligned to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), as the winner of the LC1 chairperson seat.
The outcome has since sparked mixed reactions within the community, with some residents welcoming the declaration while others questioned the credibility of the process following the destruction of key electoral materials.
The Bar-Opok incident highlights rising political tensions at the village level nationwide, raising urgent questions about electoral management, security preparedness, and the need to safeguard democratic processes.
