It’s gold again for Dr. Obote College

Lira | Dr. Obote College in Boroboro, Lira City, was declared winner of the 2026 Science and Technology Innovation at an exhibition organised by SESEMAT in Kampala.

Participating schools were from more than 10 sub-regions of Uganda, including four schools from Lango—Comboni College, St. Katherine Girls’ Secondary School, Fr. Aloysious Secondary School, and Bar Secondary School.

The competition was adjudicated by SESEMAT officials from the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).

Addressing journalists on July 13, 2026, at Dr Obote College Boroboro, the patron of the ICT Club, James Angura, announced the national dominance of Dr Obote College in robotics innovation.

At the exhibition, the students proudly showcased the Doctorian Medical Robot – an AI-powered autonomous medical delivery robot designed to address critical challenges facing Uganda’s healthcare delivery system.

The robot is designed to deliver drugs safely to patients’ bedsides and in isolation wards, especially during responses and treatment of pandemics.

Angura said it verifies the patient and delivers the prescribed drugs using AI recognition by navigating the hospital wards and corridors through a complex array of autonomous AI LiDAR and sensors.

This robust system, he says, eliminates human error through automated processes – thus minimising infection risks for healthcare workers.

He demonstrated the Doctorian Medical Robot’s processes that start with a nurse assigning a prescribed drug using a mobile application. The robot then plans its route using LiDAR and a pre-mapped hospital layout, and delivers the drug safely to the patient by identifying the patient’s bed using AI-powered recognition.

The brains behind this groundbreaking innovation – Odongo Joachim (S.5) and Alum Edrinah (S.6) received accolades for this astounding achievement. Their work has no doubt brought honour to Dr Obote College, Boroboro.

In a ceremony to receive the Gold Award at the school, Canon Ken Odur Gabelle, the College’s Chairperson of the Board of Governors, thanked the headmaster, Rev. Dick Alengo and his team for continuing with the tradition of academic excellence and innovation that the school is renowned for.

He lauded the efforts of parents and students, which ensured excellence not only in academics but also in various activities such as performing arts, debating and sports.

Canon Gabelle underscored the commitment of the Board of Governors in building on the past glories and repositioning Dr. Obote College Boroboro as one of the leading providers of holistic secondary education in the country.

The Canon could not help but salute the illustrious contribution of Dr. Obote College for producing top professionals in the fields of engineering, medicine, law, sports, politics, agriculture, public administration, journalism, finance and banking, to mention but a few.

“We are very proud of this rich legacy and are happy to see that the spirit of excellence has not been dimmed by years of conflict and a significant deterioration in the quality of school infrastructure.

“Building on the work of our predecessors, the Governing Board – supported by the Alumni community is poised to develop strategies aimed at the holistic development of students to identify and optimise their God-given talents as catalysts for attaining global excellence,” he concluded.

Tom Ogwang, deputy headteacher, narrated that in 2013, Dr Obote College won the National Innovation Grand Challenge at Makerere University.

Three years later, in 2016, the school reclaimed the same award, and in 2017, Dr. Obote College represented Uganda at an international competition in Washington, D.C.

“With an enrolment of 1,150 students, Dr. Obote College believes in the holistic development of students and is guided by core Christian values, a high sense of hard work and personal achievement.

“This year alone, the school was champion in the district athletic championship; the rugby team won the original trophy; and the baseball team won the original trophy in addition to several other trophies.

Preparations are underway to represent Lira City in the national scouts camping next month,” the deputy headteacher recounted.

According to Joyce Auma Testuter, the Regional SESEMAT Trainer, also a science teacher at Dr.Obote College and in charge of the team at the national exhibition, the exhibition provided learners with an opportunity to showcase their work and offer practical solutions to some of the challenges in our society

Alum Edrinah Mary, a Form Six student, pledged to continue with the experience she gained during the national competition.

“It cannot stop at this level. I am also calling upon female students to join the Doctorian Medical Robot project in the next phase of development, which includes hospital mapping using AI, multi-robot coordination, and temperature-controlled storage, among others,” she said.

With the support of the stakeholders – education policymakers, governing board, alumni, parents, teachers, Dr. Obote College will not only become a centre of academic and sporting excellence, but a respectable contributor to national development through science and innovation.
