Four detained for alleged murder of habitual thief in Myene

Police in Oyam district are investigating a suspected murder by mob action which occurred on July 20, 2026, at about 4am at Acimi “B” village, Acimi parish, Myene sub-county in Oyam district. 

Ejang Agnes, 44, LCI chairperson of Acimi “B” village, reported the incident to the police. The deceased has been identified as Ogoga Moses, 20, a resident of Olwarut village, Myene parish, Myene sub-county in Oyam district.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO North Kyoga Region, identified the suspects as Atoo Michael, Opio Amos, Emor Alfred, and one Ocen.

Others are still at large.

According to SP Okema, it’s alleged that Ogoga Moses was a habitual thief and on the night of July 20 at about 4am, he broke into the kitchen house of Atoo Michael at Acimi “B” village and stole two chickens.

Atoo heard him and came out armed with an axe and started chasing him. In a short distance, he caught up with Ogoga and assaulted him.

After disabling Ogoga, Atoo made an alarm which attracted other neighbours like Opio Amos, Emor Alfred, Ocen and others, who joined him and together, they assaulted Ogoga Moses to death.

Thereafter, Atoo Michael called the area LC1 chairperson, Ejang Agnes and informed her of the mob action leading to the death of Agoga Moses.

According to police, the LC1 chairperson immediately reported the incident to Myene sub-county police station and inquiries commenced.

A case file of murder by mob action was registered; statements were recorded from the reporter and other relevant witnesses.

The crime scene was visited by the District CID Oyam and processed by SOCO in company of both uniformed police and detectives.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Anyeke HCIV mortuary pending postmortem examination.

“It’s really a very unfortunate incident,” SP Okema said, adding, “Cases of theft have continued to be carried out by some individual criminals whom the community have always taken upon themselves to judge their actions; we would like to appeal to members of the public to apprehend and bring such errant individuals to the police for investigation and possible prosecution before the court of law.”
