The Police in Lira City East Division, working jointly with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) say they have arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged possession of counterfeit currency and materials believed to be used in the production of fake notes.

According to North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the operation was conducted on July 11, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m. at Agenda 501 Hotel, located in Ireda Agali Cell, Ireda East Ward, Lira City East Division.

The raid followed intelligence-led information.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Magambo Bashir, 55, resident of California village, Kyankende sub-county, Kiryandongo district; Epieu David, 43, from Amuria district; Ebulu Emmanuel, 46, from Kapelebyong district and Omuria Abdu, 40, from Soroti City.

SP Okema added that one individual who was initially among the group is currently assisting Police with investigations as an informant.

During the operation, security personnel recovered suspected counterfeit in shs50,000 notes totaling shs3,000,000, alongside various materials and chemicals believed to have been intended for the production of counterfeit currency.

A case of alleged possession of counterfeit currency has been registered at Lira City East Division.

Police promptly visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and recovered the suspected exhibits. The four suspects have been detained to facilitate ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the recovered counterfeit notes and related materials will be submitted to the Bank of Uganda Currency Centre in Lira for forensic examination and analysis on Monday, July 13, 2026, to support the case.

The police strongly caution members of the public against engaging in the manufacture, possession, circulation, or use of counterfeit currency, emphasising that these are serious criminal offences.

“Anyone with information regarding such activities is encouraged to report it to the nearest police station,” the PRO appealed.

This incident comes just one week after a similar operation in Lira City, where four suspects—including a woman—were arrested in connection with fake US dollar notes with an alleged face value of shs30 billion.

SP Okema stated that in that case, a safe was opened in the presence of the investigative team, revealing bundles of notes suspected to be counterfeit US dollars.

The exhibits consisted of approximately one hundred bundles of USD 100 notes, with a purported face value of USD 9,000,000, equivalent to roughly shs33,750,000,000.

All exhibits were properly documented and secured in accordance with established procedures, and the relevant search certificate was attached to the case file.
