Adjumani Secondary School is set to undergo a major transformation after being selected among ten schools across the West Nile and Acholi sub-regions to benefit from the ‘We Teach ’ project.
The project is an education improvement initiative implemented by Enabel in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports and funded by the European Union.
The development was announced during a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction works at the school, where leaders, education stakeholders, and community members gathered to witness the official launch.
Construction works will be undertaken by Belivic Logistics Company and are expected to be completed within six months.
The We Teach project further aims at improving learning environments and education outcomes through the construction and renovation of infrastructure, provision of furniture, ICT equipment, and solar-powered facilities in selected schools.
Speaking during the ceremony, Waivale Frank, the Enabel Infrastructure Officer, said the project is part of a wider government partnership aimed at strengthening education and health facilities across Uganda.
“Enabel works directly with the government of Uganda, and we are intervening in health and education facilities countrywide. This intervention, which covers five districts in West Nile and Acholi, has an infrastructure component of over 500 million euros.”
He explained that the support goes beyond the construction of buildings and includes essential learning equipment that will improve the quality of education.
“So, each school has shares, and the infrastructure is both the buildings, but also the equipment which is the furniture and the ICT block; the ICT materials and solar system.”
The acting deputy headteacher of Adjumani Secondary School, Ujiga Stephen, welcomed the project, describing it as a major milestone that will change the face of the institution.
“Adjumani SS is going to receive a facelift from the Enabel project. There is going to be a new administration block, a new multi-purpose ICT and library block, and we are also going to have classrooms renovated, latrines, and all these will not leave the school the same.”
According to school administrators, the new ICT and library block will create opportunities for students to access digital learning resources and improve their technological skills, while the renovated classrooms and sanitation facilities will provide a more conducive environment for learning.
Ujiga calls on parents, old students, and community members to continue supporting the school as it enters a new phase of development.
District leaders also praised the partnership between the Government of Uganda, Enabel, and the European Union, saying the investment demonstrates a commitment to improving education services in Adjumani district.
Representing the LC5 chairperson, the secretary for social services in Adjumani district, Mali Kennedy, expressed appreciation to the partners for selecting Adjumani Secondary School among the beneficiary institutions.
“I want to thank the Ministry of Education and Sports together with Enable for their collaboration and solidarity that they are showing to the people of Adjumani.
“To support this kind of project, as a district leadership, we value your solidarity and assistance that you are rendering to the people of Adjumani district.”
He noted that the district leadership recognises the importance of investing in education infrastructure as a way of improving academic performance and creating opportunities for young people.
Mali further emphasised the historical significance of Adjumani Secondary School, describing it as an institution that has served generations of learners over the years.
“Adjumani Secondary School is one of the oldest secondary schools under Moyo.”
He assured the implementing partners and the contractor of the district’s full support throughout the implementation period to ensure the project is completed successfully and delivers the intended benefits to learners and the community.
“As the office of LC 5 chairman, I really want to assure you that we shall be working hand in hand to see that this project comes to an end successfully.”
