Lira | Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Woman Member of Parliament for Lira City and former Minister of Health, has officially assumed office as the new Government Chief Whip.
She expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for what she termed a “wise decision” to entrust her with the crucial role.
Speaking shortly after her appointment, Dr. Aceng described herself as “happy to take on” the responsibilities of the Office of the Government Chief Whip, tasked with mobilising parliamentary support for government business and ensuring discipline among ruling-party legislators.
“I like a team that is prayerful, with a high level of integrity, honesty, and hard work. I look forward to a great term ahead,” Dr. Aceng said, outlining the core values she intends to instil in her team as she whips in and outside Parliament.

The seasoned politician, who rose to national prominence during her tenure as Health Minister for her COVID-19 response, also took the time to commend President Museveni once again for his confidence in her leadership abilities.
She noted that the President’s decision reflects a commitment to experienced, results-oriented leaders.

Beyond the corridors of power in Kampala, Dr. Aceng extended heartfelt appreciation to the people of the Lango sub-region, who stood with her throughout her time as Health Minister.
She praised their unwavering support, resilience, and partnership during her years of service, which she said laid a foundation for her continued political journey.
“I am deeply grateful to the people of Lango for standing with me during my position as Health Minister. Your prayers, encouragement, and solidarity have brought me this far,” she added.
Political analysts say her appointment as Chief Whip signals the President’s desire to consolidate parliamentary coordination ahead of key legislative agendas, while also rewarding a trusted figure with proven administrative experience.
Dr. Aceng replaces the previous leadership in the office and is expected to immediately begin coordinating the ruling National Resistance Movement’s parliamentary caucus.
She reiterated her commitment to a transparent and disciplined term, urging her new team to prioritise collective responsibility over individual ambition.
