Oyam: Zaire village man, 49, murdered by son,15, over suspected cattle restocking phone alert

The territorial police in Oyam district are investigating a case of murder by assault that occurred on April 29, 2026, at 6pm at Zaire village, Myene parish, Myene sub-county, Oyam.

The crime was reported to Minakulu Town Council Police Station on April 30 by Okodi Santo, 52, farmer and resident of the area on April 30, 2026.

The deceased has been identified as Okeng Simon, 49, peasant farmer of the same village. The suspect is his son, Oyet Ambrose,15.

Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased had been expecting money meant for cattle restocking from the government through his mobile phone, which at the time was being used by the suspect.

On the evening of April 29, 2026, the deceased returned home and found the suspect attempting to read messages on the phone. Suspecting that the expected funds had been received, he demanded for the phone, but the suspect declined, leading to a quarrel.

In the course of the altercation, the suspect allegedly picked up a piece of wood and assaulted the deceased, striking him several times on the head, causing him to collapse, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga region, said.

The deceased’s wife, who witnessed the incident, intervened and attempted to rush him to a nearby health facility, but he unfortunately died on the way.

The suspect was immediately apprehended by local leaders and handed over to police at Minakulu Town Council Police Station.

A case of murder by assault was registered and a team of homicide detectives, together with uniformed personnel, visited and processed the scene of crime. Statements have since been recorded from relevant witnesses.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Anyeke Health Centre IV for postmortem examination, while the suspect remains in custody pending further interrogation.

“Investigations are ongoing, and more updates will be provided as inquiries progress,” SP Okema added.
