The police in Amolatar district, under the command of the District Police Commander (DPC), SP Mafabi John, are keeping in their custody a key suspect in the rampant motorcycle theft in the area.
In an intelligence-led operation targeting the theft of motorcycles within Amolatar town council and its surrounding areas, Edii Ambrose, a resident of Odyak village, Muntu parish, Muntu sub-county, Amolatar, was arrested.
The operations were carried out between 10pm on May 29 and 4am on May 30.
Two suspected stolen motorcycles were recovered with the following specifications: A Bajaj boxer red in colour, registered as UFM 255Z.
Another is a Bajaj boxer, red in colour, with its registration plate removed.
The suspect is currently in police custody to assist with investigations aimed at establishing the ownership of the recovered motorcycles and identifying other persons involved in the theft of motorcycles within the district, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, PRO of North Kyoga region, said.
He added: “The police note with concern the increasing cases of motorcycle theft and therefore urge the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) to intensify community sensitisation on crime prevention and the security of motorcycles.”
Intelligence-led and routine operations targeting motorcycle theft will continue across the district, SP Okema added.
The traffic department, he said, is encouraged to strengthen enforcement by impounding numerous motorcycles and those suspected of being stolen.
Members of the public are advised to always secure their motorcycles using effective locking devices such as U-locks.
Police warned that churches, entertainment centres, and other public gathering places should also provide adequate security arrangements to safeguard the property of their congregants and patrons, including motorcycles and bicycles.
