Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) is set to commission a new, state-of-the-art Gynecology and Obstetric Fistula Ward, after the contractor completed the project well before the deadline.
In November 2025, the hospital awarded a six-month, shs600 million contract to Nabyalen Construction and General Supply Company Limited.
However, in a rare feat of efficiency, the contractor finalised the works in just four months, concluding in February 2026.
Construction began immediately after the contract was signed in November 2025. The project is fully funded by partners under the MUSA Project, based in San Diego, California, USA.
Once opened, the new facility will dramatically ease pressure on the hospital, expanding the current gynecology ward capacity from just 10 beds to 45 beds.
According to hospital management, the new unit will be fully equipped with modern hospital beds, operating tables, anesthesia machines, and patient monitors. It will also feature a conference room and dedicated office space for nursing staff and doctors.
Dr. Andrew Odur, the hospital’s Acting Director, explained that the international partners were moved to fund the project after witnessing the dire conditions under which sensitive gynecology and fistula services were being delivered.
Currently, the maternity ward, originally designed for just 12 beds, frequently handles over 40 mothers daily. Similarly, the postpartum ward, built for 20 patients, is often overwhelmed, forcing some mothers and caregivers to sleep on the floor or outside the ward.
The newly constructed ward will be officially commissioned on March 7, 2026. The ceremony will be presided over by the Minister of Health and Lira City Woman MP, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, at the hospital grounds, according to Dr. Odur.
