Ahead of the International Women’s Day celebration on March 8, women in Amolatar district have planned to remind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of his pledges not met.
The global theme “Give to Gain,” resonates well with the organised women of Amolatar in the Lango sub-region.
During a meeting held on Wednesday March 4 at the women’ s mill premises in the district, the women agreed not to forsake the upcoming women’s day celebration.
Judith Acana, chairperson of Amolatar Women Mill Association, said they have a vision and strategic plan to save and acquire a common market.
The market, she said, will benefit them and widen their market base.
She said the President had earlier promised a number of grants to their milling facility like tractors and truck lorry to boost their production.
“We will use this forthcoming women’s day celebration to remind him so he can fulfill his pledge,” Acana told tndNews, Uganda.
The Deputy RDC of Amolatar, Obonyo Magwar who is credited for a closed look at the women’s project, accepted the responsibility to link the women to the Office of the President.
Magwar recalled that the President made a pledge way back in 2010. “..ecause of poor leadership and reluctance, these haven’t been acquired,” he said.
Ketty Obang, a member of the mill said they are eyeing the President so he can help the group with expensive machinery like tractors, lorries and also give them capital to fast-track their SACCO.
Anna Okot Sam, a member of the SACCO said women are living on the Lake shores. “If possible, the President should at least build a fish processing plant to boost fisheries-related business in the district for women.”
Meanwhile, the Amolatar district forestry officer advised women to take on other projects like poultry and forestry to widen their business base.
A three-woman delegation of Acana Judith and two others yet to be elected was formed to go and remind the President on Women’s Day at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
Uganda will mark the day under the theme: “Scaling up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for all Women and Girls in Uganda.”
