The District Production Officer (DPO) of Dokolo has urged farmers to strengthen agricultural production and productivity by utilising modern farming technology.
This was revealed during an agricultural exhibition organised by Inspire Uganda held at the Dokolo production ground, Dokolo town council.
The exhibition was organised purposely for creating awareness, linkage among farmers and suppliers, and bridging gaps between local agro inputs dealers, cooperatives and local government to boost agricultural production.
Dr Richard Enyang, the DPO revealed that there is low production and productivity among the farmers due to the adoption of poor methods of farming and the use of farm inputs that provide poor quality yields.
He highlighted that they are aiming to enhance food and nutrition, increase household incomes, wealth creation and improve the quality of life among the people of the Dokolo district at large.
He further explained the main factors which are contributing to low production such as unfavourable climatic conditions, use of rudimentary tools and equipment and high population growth rates which are leading to land fragmentation.
Joseph Opio, the Dokolo district coordinator of Inspire Uganda revealed that they have built the capacities of farmers in different sectors such as poultry farming, vegetable plantation, good practices on the use of irrigation methods and proper ways of use of fertiliser to boost high crop yields among others.
Meanwhile, Isamel Suleiman Masaba the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Dokolo appealed to farmers to change their mindsets from subsistence agriculture to commercial farming to eradicate poverty and enhance household incomes.
Masaba urged the people of Dokolo and the Lango sub-region to be peace makers and advocates for hard work to transform the community positivity.
