Council meeting to approve Amolatar 2026/27 budget adjourned indefinitely over pay

Amolatar

Chaos and uncertainty engulfed Amolatar district local government on May 8 following the abrupt collapse of a critical council meeting.

The meeting, which started at 11:30 am, was intended to approve the district’s budget for 2026-2027.

However, it was adjourned within ten minutes as councillors staged a dramatic boycott.

Their protest was driven by months of unpaid allowances and mounting allegations of financial mismanagement among the district administration.

The standoff lasted over three hours.

Efforts to resume the meeting proved futile as councillors engaged in heated exchanges with senior district officials, including the newly appointed Chief Administrative Officer, Rhoda Oroma, and district chairperson Geoffrey Ocen Kiring.

The councillors remained unwavering in their demand: no deliberation on any district business, including the pivotal budget approval, would take place until all outstanding arrears owed to them were fully settled.

With no resolution, the district council speaker Martin Ayonge took a rare step of adjourning the house indefinitely.

This unprecedented suspension leaves the district’s financial planning in limbo, casting doubt on the government’s ability to deliver essential services and implement development projects.

Speaker Ayonge made it clear that no future council sittings will be scheduled until the councillors are paid, underscoring the deep divisions and financial strain gripping the Amolatar district local government.
