Documented murder cases in Lango sub-region as of February 7

Murder is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. In Uganda, murder cases

Based on available 2024-2025 security data, Uganda’s homicide rate was estimated to be around 9.2 per 100,000 people, with a crime index of 54.1.

Between May and August 2024, Lango sub-region recorded 60 murder cases, with authorities calling for a dispute resolution mechanism to eradicate the vice.

With only 40 days into 2026, crime rates in Lango seem to be on the rise. From January 31 to February 7, tndNews, Uganda, has put down documented murder cases across different districts in the sub-region.

On January 31, the sudden death of Alyanga Alex, 70, was recorded in Apac. The deceased was a resident of Owang Cell, Apac Municipality. The incident was reported to Apac CPS on February 1.

The police report indicates that the deceased was in a relationship with Ayugi Molly, 40, of Owang Cell, Arocha Division, Apac Municipality.

It’s alleged that on January 31, Alyanga, who had been in a relationship with Ayugi for one year, hosted his lover and two other ladies. Ayugi moved with alcohol, and they all got drunk before each returned to their different homes.

Later in the night, Ayugi is said to have returned to Alyanga’s house as part of her routine visits and left at 6am.

Shortly after, the man was found dead by his daughter, Agoa Winny, who reported the incident to the authorities.

On February 3, police again recorded a suspected murder case in Barodong Ward, Arocha Division, Apac Municipality. The deceased was later identified as Awanyi Ezra, nine months old.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, PRO of the North Kyoga Region, said on January 24 the deceased, his mother Namboze Robinah, and the babysitter, only identified as Monica, left home and never returned.

However, on February 3, children who had gone for fishing and hunting discovered the body of a child half buried with one foot exposed. This case was later reported to Apac CPS for further investigations.

On February 3 in Kakoge “C” Cell, Lira City West Division, a suspected murder case was reported to police by Adupa Johnson, proprietor of Saviour Senior Secondary School.

According to SP Okema, on February 3 at 9am, Adupa discovered a decomposing body of an unknown person inside his school’s pit latrine. The school is located in Kakoge.

This murder case remains under investigation.

The trend continued on February 4 in Akiipe Cell, Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division, where attempted murder cases were recorded.

Kia Rita, 21, and a year two student of BBA at Lira University, was cut from the back by her ex-boyfriend identified as Oceng Daniel. He’s a resident of Dokolo district.

On the same day Kia survived death, police recorded a murder case on Olwa Brian, 12. The crime took place in Wikwoyo village, Kulabura parish, Minakulu sub-county, Oyam district.

The deceased was allegedly, according to police, beaten and kicked to death by his parents—Omara Denis, 40, Awino Janet, and Komakech Odyek.

Still on February 4, Okello Bonny, 35, of Teyen “B” village, Orupu parish in Iceme, Oyam district, was murdered, police say.

His murder, according to SP Okema, was reported to Iceme Police Station by LC1 chairperson of Teyen “B” village, Okello Patrick.

On February 7, a murder by assault occurred in Teiconga village, Kai parish, Alebtong district. The deceased was identified by his nickname as ” Bye Bye.”

A resident of Lira City, SP Okema, said the deceased was one of those not officially invited to a wedding event, but it turned chaotic.
