Elections2026 | Lango: Electorate votes Atul, Adea, Orik; Apili, DK, Dila are dismissed

The ruling NRM party has retained the Lira City Council mayoral seat following the January 22 polls.

Across the nation, voters took to the ballots to elect their LC5 chairpersons, City and Municipal mayors and their councillors.

Across districts in Lango, more than five incumbent LC5 chairpersons lost. In Lira City, Mayor Sam Atul was reelected with 16,905 votes.

His rival, Ogwang Olwa Mike, widely known as Veve, polled 11,752. Nine candidates were vying for the position to replace Atul.

These mayoral candidates include Awor Sarah Angweri (Ind), who polled 257 votes; Obote Fred (FDC) received 149 votes; and Ogwang Patrick (NUP) received 379 votes.

Others are Okello George Ayo (Ind) with 3,221 votes, Okello Romanus Hannie (Ind) with 89 votes; Opige Patrick (Ind) with 105 votes and Opio Henry Ogenyi (Ind) with 117 votes.

A total of 33,034 valid votes were cast for all the candidates, according to Ipeto Aggrey James, Returning Officer of Lira City electoral area.

Outside Lira City 

In Apac district, NRM’s Ambrose Agec won the LC5 seat, defeating the incumbent UPC’s Asanti Odongo.

‎Agec got 29,928 votes to Odongo’s 17,470 votes.

In Oyam, Benson Dila Oyuku (24,041 votes) was defeated by Adea Nelson of UPC who got 45,914 votes. In the 2021 local government elections, Dila (NRM) ousted Adea only for Oyam to witness a political revenge in 2026.

Adea spoke shortly after his victory was announced by the Returning Officer of Oyam. He promised to bring to an end rampant job buying and corruption practices by the incumbent chairperson.

The UPC chairperson for Oyam district also vowed to unite civil servant and technical staff in the district during his new term starting in May.

In Dokolo district, Returning Officer Moses Otim declared Peter Ogwang of UPC LC5 chairperson-elect after obtaining 29,113 votes.

Ogwang defeated incumbent James Otoo Apili who obtained 13,581 votes. Apili, formerly an FDC member, defected to NRM last year and won the ruling party flag ahead of the general elections.

In Kole, Oteng Moses of NRM won and will succeed Awany Andrew Moses who lost the Kole South MP seat race on January 15.

Alebtong: Odongo Denis Kennedy of UPC lost to Ongom Ambrose of NRM.

Kwania: Akaca KK George of NRM won

Otuke: Abola Francis, (Ind) won after making a u-turn on Otuke East MP race.

In Lira district, incumbent RCM Okello Orik defeated Adem Morris Okello (Ind) and Onyanga William of UPC.
