Just by reducing the usage of antibiotics alone we can not prevent Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Bacteria multiply very fast.
According to Dr. Yvan Hutin, Director of the WHO’s AMR Division, the key to combating AMR is prevention. “If infections don’t occur, resistance doesn’t arise.” This statement holds true universally.
Many hospitals claim adherence to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) protocols in their Intensive Care Unit (ICUs).
However, a year-long study by the Indian Council of Medical Research in 120 ICUs across 39 centers in India reveals 38% of superbug infected ICU patients die in 14 days.
This shows that despite diligent adherence to hygiene protocols infections are still present in ICUs.
Air and surface infections should be prevented and controlled in the ICU on a daily basis. With the presently available toxic disinfectants it is not possible to fog daily in ICU occupied with patients.
Because of this problem, hospitals do fogging in ICU once in a week or 15 days hence, more hospital acquired infections are occurring in ICU.
To reduce this alarming death rate, we need to “act now: Protect our present, secure our future.”
Inspired by this WAAW 2025 theme, BRAINS Hospital and Pragathi Rural Development Trust started research on preventing Hospital Acquired Infections and AMR in ICUs.
Brains Hospital used groundbreaking “Citrobioshield fogging” method, without relocating the patients and achieved zero Hospital Acquired Infections and AMR in ICUs, setting a new standard in patient safety.
It is the only tested and proven effective method available in the world.
Interested hospitals can contact Brains Hospital, Bengaluru or Pragathi Rural Development Trust for more information.
Pragathi Rural Development Trust, an NGO, as per its objectives, is actively involved in the research and bringing awareness on the prevention of infections and AMR.
We can train the interested healthcare personnel of Uganda and other African countries, if the governments of those countries are interested in sending them to Bangalore, India.
Dr. R. Nagaraja Naidu, M.B., B.S., DHA is the Chairman of Pragathi Rural Development Trust
