Otuke County MP Omara raises alarm as 3 bridges are cut off

Otuke County Member of Parliament, Paul Omara, has brought urgent attention in Parliament to three critical bridges in his constituency that have been affected by recent heavy rains and flooding.

The MP is calling for immediate government intervention.

During a parliamentary session on October 30, 2025, the MP who is also the NRM flagbearer for the upcoming general election, highlighted the severe impact of flooding across Northern Uganda, particularly in Otuke and Alebtong districts, where vital inter-district road connections have been disrupted.

The three washed-out bridges identified by Omara are: Kaguta Bridge, connecting Otuke to Lira district; Apak Bridge, linking Otuke to Alebtong district; and Orik Bridge.

Orik provides access to the Agago district and into the wider Acholi East and Karamoja sub-region.

“These floods have severely limited access to my constituency from Lira, Alebtong, and the Karamoja direction,” Omara stated. He further warned that submerged crops near the bridges could lead to starvation among affected communities if not urgently addressed.

Following his submission, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa directed the Minister of Works and Transport to respond to the concerns.

General Katumba Wamala, the Works Minister, acknowledged the issue and committed to taking remedial action once floodwaters receded.

The timely intervention by MP Omara has reinforced his reputation as an active representative, with constituents expressing continued confidence in his leadership as elections approach.

At the moment, we don’t have intercross businesses taking place, Omara said.

There is a deteriorating state of road infrastructure across the country, particularly its vulnerability to the current extreme weather events.

One of the offered bridges, Kaguta, was built under the Rural Bridges Infrastructure Development Project.

The bridge contract was awarded to a local contractor, M/S Coil Ltd. The 3-span 30m long reinforced concrete for shs1,421,849,000.
