The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to criminal elements intending to disrupt the peace during the upcoming Independence Day commemoration.
The warning comes as the nation prepares to mark 63 years of self-rule from British colonialists.
North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, addressed a weekly press conference on Monday at the headquarters in Erute, Lira City, ahead of the national celebrations scheduled for Thursday, October 9.
The regional police appealed directly to individuals planning to cause, emphasising that the region has enjoyed total peace and this should continue for everyone to enjoy the day.
SP Okema assured the public of the Force’s commitment to security. “The region is peaceful, and as security agencies, we shall provide a standard peace by ensuring deployments in all the event areas and other strategic spots.”
The PRO also called upon the general public to remain vigilant and to cooperate with the police. “We are calling upon all the general public to be vigilant and to report any case of insecurity immediately so that our team can act accordingly,” he said.
Okema noted that it has come to their attention that criminals often use such public holidays as an opportunity to break into homes and steal property, such as phones.
In a bid to bolster security, the police also urged all places of worship and other establishments to install CCTV cameras where necessary.
This measure is intended to help identify and deter suspected individuals who may attempt to commit theft, ensuring a safer environment for all during the celebrations.
