Police say “no processions” ahead of Kadaga homecoming Friday

Uganda Police Force has approved the homecoming and thanksgiving ceremony of Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga who is the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs scheduled for September 19.

However, the Force has banned all processions during the event to avoid traffic disruptions and ensure public safety.

In a September 17 letter to Peter Kisambira, chairman of the Homecoming Steering Committee, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) stressed the need to maintain law and order, noting that thousands of people are expected to attend.

The event, originally planned for September 17, was moved to September 19 at the Kthe amuli Municipal Council playground.

Ahead of the Friday event, police have issued strict guidelines for organisers, emphasising that they must obtain approvals from local authorities and venue managers, coordinate with District Security Committees, and put in place proper safety measures, including public health precautions.

The ban on processions comes because such gatherings could interfere with normal traffic and business along the routes.

“There must be no processions as this may interfere with normal traffic flow and other routine businesses along the routes,” the letter, signed by Simon Peter Okoshi on behalf of the IGP, stated.

Speaking to tndNews, PRO Kiira police region, SP James Mubi confirmed that the Jinja celebrations have been relocated from Busoga Square to the Jinja Agricultural Show Grounds to better accommodate attendees and reduce disruptions.

“No processions will be allowed because they tend to paralyse the normal flow of traffic and it is something we don’t wish to see happening”, he added.

Guaranteeing maximum security, Mubi called for joint cooperation from all the stakeholders.

“Let’s cooperate. Do not misbehave. We don’t want to see pickpockets and we don’t want to see uncontrolled behavior from the supporters. Let’s make the event colourful,” said Mubi.

Kadaga’s homecoming celebrates her long political career and contributions as a former Speaker of Parliament. The 69-year-old Busoga leader recently lost her bid to retain the NRM National Vice Chairman – Female position to current Speaker Annet Anita Among.

Over the last 30 years, Kadaga has been a major political figure in Busoga, and the event is expected to draw large crowds from across the region.
