IRC donates motorcycle to Lamwo district to boost education service delivery

Lamwo

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) PlayMatters, has on Thursday August 14, 2025 handed over a brand-new motorcycle to the Lamwo district local government to strengthen field operations and improve access to essential services in remote communities, particularly in the education sector.

The motorcycle, delivered in an event that attracted district education officials and other stakeholders at the district headquarters, was officially received by Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Lagu Samuel John, who applauded the IRC for the timely support.

He announced that the motorcycle would be allocated to the education department to improve school monitoring and supervision.

“This donation is going to directly benefit our Education Department, helping officers to reach schools in even the most remote areas. We thank IRC for standing with Lamwo,” Lagu said.

Lamwo District Education Officer (DEO) Banabas Langoya welcomed the support, noting that the department has long faced serious challenges in monitoring schools due to a lack of transport.

“Much as this will go a long way in helping us reach schools more regularly, there is still an urgent need for a vehicle to further strengthen our supervision capacity,” Langoya remarked.

Speaking at the handover, Martin Opio, the IRC senior manager for Lamwo settlement camp in Palabek , said the organization recognized the transport challenges faced by local government departments, especially in delivering services to hard-to-reach areas.

“This motorcycle will help field officers reach communities faster, monitor projects more effectively, and respond to needs promptly. It is our way of supporting the district to serve both the host community and refugees more efficiently,” he said.

The donation comes at a time when Lamwo District continues to face logistical challenges in reaching widely dispersed rural communities. Many of the district’s access roads become nearly impassable during the rainy season, limiting the ability of local authorities to conduct regular outreach and monitoring.

Background

Lamwo District, located in Northern Uganda along the border with South Sudan, is home to both host communities and thousands of refugees settled in Palabek Refugee Settlement. Since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan in 2013, Lamwo has seen a steady influx of displaced people seeking safety.

The district now plays a crucial humanitarian role, working alongside agencies such as the IRC, UNHCR, and World Food Programme to meet the needs of both refugees and local residents.

The IRC has operated in Lamwo for several years, delivering programs in health, education, livelihoods, and protection. This latest contribution of a motorcycle further strengthens the district’s logistical capacity, ensuring faster response times and better monitoring of service delivery in some of the most hard-to-reach areas.
