Apac Municipality defeats Lira City East in the Dwog Pacu Cup

The Dwog Pacu cup kicked off on Saturday, July 12, 2025, with an exciting match between Apac Municipality and Lira City East at Uganda Technical College Lira.

Apac Municipality made history by securing their first-ever win in the tournament. The team showcased impressive skills, led by their star striker Otim Zaka, who plays for SC Villa in the Uganda Premier League.

Zaka scored a hat- trick in normal time, setting the tone for Apac Municipality’s victory.

Despite containing the pressure in the second half, Lira City East failed to score, ultimately conceding defeat. This win marks a significant milestone for Apac Municipality in the Dwog Pacu tournament: first edition 2025.

Dan Obote Kegere, a member of the FUFA Executive Committee for the northern region, gave the green light for local football tournaments during the opening ceremony and noted this is to identify and nurture sporting talents.

He stated that this initiative of Dwog Pacu Cup might even be extended to the Acholi sub-region to promote football development across the northern region.

Lawrence Egole, the Resident City Commissioner for Lira, spoke at the opening ceremony, and encouraged teams to play well and showcase their talents.

Egole added that Dwog Pacu tournament could have a positive impact on football in the region, providing opportunities for local players to shine and potentially get noticed by bigger clubs.

Kenneth Kaunda Okwir, chairman of the Central Organizing Committee announced the cash prizes during his speech at the opening ceremony. The prizes include

Winner: 5 million Ugandan shillings

Runner-up: 3 million Ugandan shillings

Third place: 2 million Ugandan shillings

Fourth place: 1 million Ugandan shillings

Quarterfinal losers: 500,000 Ugandan shillings each

He said the cash prizes aim to encourage competition and recognize outstanding performance in the tournament.

Tournaments are currently underway at UTC Lira and Lango College playgrounds, with the finals scheduled for August 3, 2025.
