Boniface Okot, a northern Ugandan youth member of parliament, is preparing to run for the Kole South parliamentary seat in the general elections of 2026.
Okot is well-known in Parliament for his passionate advocacy, and his youth-focused initiatives and legislative proposals have made an impact.
In a recent parliamentary address, Okot advocated for government support for universities in northern Uganda, emphasizing the importance of promoting long-term peace and addressing the plight of Karamojong street children in Kampala.
He specifically emphasized the need to support the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU), a move that would significantly benefit the region.
Okot’s legislative prowess was on full display with his remarks on the StartUp Act, a progressive measure aimed at incentivizing youth participation in socio-economic transformation.
According to MP Okot, countries like Nigeria have built thriving entrepreneurship hubs through conducive regulatory environments, and Uganda can follow suit by providing tax incentives, relief financing, and regulatory support to foster business resilience and sustainable growth for startups.
Some of Okot’s proposals in the StartUp bill, particularly on non-taxation of young businesses, have already been adopted, starting from the new financial year. This achievement is a testament to his dedication to creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
Okot’s bid for the Kole South seat has gained momentum, with a large section of NRM leaders from Kole South endorsing him.
Kole district NRM Administrator Sarafino Odoc emphasized that Kole South has never sent an NRM MP to Parliament since its creation in 2010, and the 2026 election must bring that change.
A leader of many talents
Okot’s intellectual prowess has not gone unnoticed. Due to his exceptional abilities, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Committee on Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives. This role will enable him to leverage his expertise to drive economic growth and development in the region.
An engineer by profession, having graduated from the prestigious Makerere University, Okot brings a unique perspective to the committee.
Additionally, his Master’s degree in Diplomacy and Global Studies has equipped him with the skills to navigate complex global issues and foster international cooperation.
With his track record of advocacy and legislative achievements, Okot is confident that the upcoming election will see increased development for Kole and the Lango sub-region.
His declaration to challenge his opponents in both the NRM primaries and the main election has electrified Kole, and his message of bringing younger and proactive leadership to the forefront is resonating with the people.
Ready to take on any opponent
Okot stated that he is more than prepared to seriously take on any opponents, including incumbent LC5 chairperson Moses Andrew Awany, who recently lost the district NRM chairperson position to Lillian Anyati.
Okot’s confidence and determination are evident in his statement, “My name ‘Okot’ means ‘rain’—and like the rain ensures food and ecological security, I have returned to secure and develop our beloved Kole South.”
The stage is set for an exciting contest, and Boniface Okot’s parliamentary experience and commitment to youth-focused initiatives could position him as a strong candidate for the Kole South seat in 2026.
