On June 3, 2025, over 1000 people attended the official opening of the historic Lt. Gen. Paul Lokech Memorial Medical Camp at Christ the King Parish in the Kitgum District.

The Paul Lokech Foundation (PLF), founded in 2022 by the late General’s family, organizes the camp, which has become an annual tradition, attracting large crowds and providing vital health services to the communities.

Major General Keith Katungi, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, spoke at the launch and described the initiative as a free healthcare outreach in memory of Lt. Gen. Lokech. He emphasized the importance of preventive care to the assembled community.

The PLF organized the camp in collaboration with George Fox University, the UPDF medical team, and other partners. Its primary goal is to provide free, accessible medical care to Kitgum residents and surrounding communities.

Major General Katungi encouraged attendees to use the services, stating that “health is the key to human living.” Take advantage of these services to check for conditions that may affect your well-being.”

This year’s camp sees continued support from George Fox University volunteers, reinforced by the medical team of the 5th Infantry Division. This strengthened collaboration is designed to maximize impact and treat a larger number of patients.

Services provided during the camp include general medical consultations, dental care, HIV testing, blood pressure and blood sugar screening.

UPDF medical personnel will further support Outpatient Department (OPD) operations for an additional two days beyond the main camp activities.

Kitgum district LC5 chairperson, Christopher Arwai Obol, praised the initiative during his remarks. He called for sustained collaboration between healthcare providers and the community.

“Lt. Gen. Lokech’s legacy in championing community well-being lives on through this camp. We thank PLF and all partners for their continued service,” he stated.

The medical camp forms part of a series of events commemorating the life and legacy of Lt. Gen. Paul Lokech, a revered regional figure and national military hero. Continuing the tributes, Agago district will host a football tournament and marathon in August 2025.

Members of the late General’s family, senior UPDF and Uganda Police Force officials, and local leaders such as Senior Assistant RDC Geoffrey Oguti and Kitgum District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Henry Otoo were all in attendance at the launch event.

Lokech died on August 21, 2021, at the rank of Major General. Known while still alive as “the Lion of Mogadishu,” he was posthumously elevated to Lt. General by President Museveni Yoweri.

After leaving Mogadishu, he was appointed deputy IGP to IGP Martin Okoth Ochola who is now retired from the police service.
