Aspirants vying for various positions on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket in Dokolo district have committed to conducting peaceful, issue-based campaigns free from personal attacks and political propaganda ahead of the 2026 general elections.
This resolution was reached during a high-level engagement meeting held on Wednesday at Jangle Comfort Zone in Akaidebe Cell, Central Ward, Dokolo Town Council. The meeting brought together NRM aspirants, Local Council 5 chairpersons, and party leaders.
Joel Opota Okuma, the NRM Dokolo District Secretary for Publicity, said the meeting birthed several resolutions aimed at fostering unity and discipline among party aspirants.
These include a commitment that no candidate shall contest as an independent after the party primaries, a ban on personal attacks, and open access to party structures for all aspirants.
“We want to ensure that our internal processes promote harmony. All aspirants are expected to support each other and uphold the party values,” Opota stated.
NRM District Chairperson Geoffrey Opio Ekong emphasized the importance of discipline and loyalty to party structures. He appealed to aspirants for parliamentary and LCV positions to respect the party’s internal mechanisms and leadership in order to foster solidarity.
“I strongly caution against political propaganda, character assassination, and verbal abuse. These behaviors can jeopardize your future leadership opportunities and sow seeds of hatred,” Ekong warned.
He also cautioned district party leaders against taking sides during the election process.
“Anyone found engaging in biased support will be expelled from their positions to prevent division and political unrest,” he added.
John Bosco Otoke, the Administrative Secretary of the NRM in Dokolo District, revealed that a comprehensive roadmap had been developed to accommodate all aspirants across various positions.
He encouraged aspirants to promote the ruling party’s development agenda rather than focusing solely on their individual ambitions.
“If disagreements and in-fighting persist, they will only lead to disorganization. We urge aspirants to prepare early and engage in constructive political discourse,” Otoke advised.
District NRM Registrar Isaac Omara pledged to offer a level playing field for all candidates throughout the primaries. He called for discipline, coordination, and fairness during the campaign period and discouraged the use of sub-county and parish registrars to pursue personal interests.
Omara also unveiled the official NRM primary election roadmap. According to the schedule, joint campaigns will run from July 1 to July 14, 2025. Parliamentary nominations will be held on July 16, while elections for LCV chairpersons are slated for July 26, 2025.
Meanwhile, Denish Ekoch, a parliamentary aspirant for Dokolo South Constituency, and Kasmiro Ogwal, contesting for Dokolo North, appealed to party leaders to allow aspirants to deploy their coordinators during the campaign.
They also called for mutual respect among candidates, urging their fellow politicians to refrain from personal attacks that could disrupt the electoral process.
Dr. Lalam Hanna Grace Atine, a Woman Member of Parliament aspirant for Dokolo, echoed similar sentiments, calling on fellow aspirants to avoid divisive politics based on affiliation, hatred, or ethnicity.
“We must remain united and avoid any form of violence or insecurity during this critical political period,” Dr. Lalam urged.
The engagement meeting marked a significant step in promoting peaceful and inclusive electoral processes within the ruling party structures in Dokolo District as Uganda prepares for the 2026 polls.
