Oyam | Since incumbent Betty Amongi chose to run for political office in Lira City, Oyam South will have a new Member of Parliament in 2026.
Constituents from Aber, Loro, Minakulu, Kamdini, Myene, and Aber sub-counties told tndNews late last year that they would vote for someone who would not abandon them once a mandate was given.
Opito Moses, an ambitious and widely exposed young man, is one of those who have expressed an interest in becoming the next MP.

He is promising to connect with development partners for service delivery and to prioritize the interests of the Oyam people.
Starting in June 2025, he plans to drill boreholes throughout Oyam to ensure safe water. Opito has also promised to save the environment because the weather has changed, resulting in no rain and crop failure.
Opito stated that environmental degradation has caused climate change. “We will be distributing tree seedlings for timber and fruit. We will bring mangoes, oranges, cashew nuts, eucalyptus, pines, and even papaws.
“It is your land that will show you that what we have given you is sufficient,” Opito said of his empowerment and climate change strategy.
The third intervention “is putting mark stones on our peoples’ land in Lango, starting from Oyam. We will put mark stones and also help people get land titles.”
To help mobilise people for the initiative, Opito said he has written to Bishops of the Catholic and Anglican Dioceses, including religious leaders for SDA, PAG and Muslims, saying “because all of us are children of God. So, we shall start it from there.”
The above, he said, is to combat land conflict in Lango (Oyam), Acholi and West Nile. “When God was talking to Moses, He asked him, ‘What have you held in your hands? Drop down what you have on your hand’.”
Asked where he will get the resources and money to implement all his initiatives for the people of Oyam and Lango, Opito replied: “We are youth….we have mobilized money through our friends.”
“You know, people like us who have had the opportunity to grow on the other side of the country have our friends in Uganda and in the diaspora. We have mobilized these resources from friends of Lango, friends of Acholi, and friends of West Nile who are the ones assisting us with these resources and money.”
Opito urges youth in Lango, especially those from Oyam to rise up “because work is now here to improve our households.”
“I cannot do this alone, equipment cannot work on itself; we want the youth to rise up and bless us, even our elderly mothers rise up, our grand(fathers) also rise up and bless us.”

He added that the “morning has come; the time has also come” for Oyam South to shine again.
Opito has pledged to partner with local and international development actors to improve livelihoods of the Oyam people.
The MP hopeful, has accused previous leaders of serving personal interests over public good, promising genuine representation that puts the community first.

Briefly, who is Opito?
He’s a lawyer and surveyor – born to David and Hellen Egwel of Oketobilo village, Akaka parish, Aber sub-county.
He is the grandson of Rev. Canon Erecenia Opito, the first Rev. Canon of Lango who was buried at All Saints Cathedral ground in Boroboro, Lira City.
In his memory, Dr. Obote College named one of the dormitories “Canon Opito”.
Opito Moses belongs to Arak Ochola Yam-yam – while his mother hails from Oyima clan.
