Nine (9) people were Wednesday, May 7 pronounced dead and three others injured in a single fatal crash at 12:40 pm.
The fatal crash happened on Kapchorwa-Mbale highway in Kapchorwa District, PRO of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, SP Kananura Michael said.
SP Kananura revealed what caused the crash. “Preliminary reports indicate that the driver, who was transporting cows and people on top, lost control on a slope due to brake failure.
He added: “The vehicle overturned, killing 9 people and injuring 03 all on the said vehicle.”
Police have urged truck drivers to adhere to safety regulations and refrain from transporting passengers on top of cargo.
“Let’s prioritize safety and protect human lives,” SP Kananura stated.
This is the second fatal road crash – in a single week in Eastern Uganda after that of YY bus company on May 5.
At approximately 5 pm in Makindu village, along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe district, the crash involved a Scania motor vehicle, registration number UAV 701C, belonging to YY Company.
The vehicle was traveling from Katosi to Jinja when the driver lost control at Makindu village.
It overturned and caught fire, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to multiple passengers who were rushed to Kawolo Hospital, St. Francis Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe, and other nearby health facilities.
