Sarah Awor Angweri, an aspirant for Lira City woman Member of Parliament under the National Resistance Movement has blasted the NRM party leaders in the city.

Awor, the current female workers’ representative to Lira City Council, has also condemned the recently concluded NRM party structure elections in Lira City.

She claimed it was full of intimidation, arrogance, and bribery, and the poll violated the party electoral commission’s rules.

Speaking to journalists on May 27, 2025 in Lira City, Awor claimed that the NRM structure elections for the city were conducted in accordance with Patriotic League Uganda ideology, with the intention of marginalizing the original party members.

According to her, during the election process, a group of true NRM members were forced to boycott due to orchestrated frustration, intimidation, and threats.

She cited Winston Ogwang, who boycotted the position of General Secretary City due to threats and malpractices.

Angweri has predicted a violent 2026 general election in the Lango sub-region, which she claimed in a media interview was being orchestrated by NRM party officials.

The violence, she said, would affect all political parties, particularly those in the Lango sub-region, as seen in the recently concluded NRM structure election.

She stated that she is advocating for unity among Lango political leaders for a common cause that will benefit the sub-region rather than pursuing selfish political goals.

In response to being spotted and cheering National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine at a recent engagement in Gulu, Awor denied officially joining the NUP.

However, Awor told the media that she admires the NUP’s leadership and stated that she will remain a staunch NRM supporter until further notice.

“Bobi Wine has ideologies against public oppression, land grabbing among others, similar to my own, but, I’m not fully a member of NUP but I’m waiting for their vetting process.”

Zainabo Ajwang, an NRM mobilizer in Lira City, recently sent a petition to the NRM Secretary General’s office as well as several party stakeholders, challenging the results of the recently concluded Lira City party structure elections.

In a letter dated May 23, 2025, Ajwang stated that the election of the NRM Workers’ League violated Article 15 of the NRM constitution.

According to her, the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development acknowledged that at least ten candidates were permitted to run without effective verification of their fabricated status under the mandatory workers’ union.

Ajwang also claimed that some of the candidates who ran unopposed did not belong to any workers’ union or have any clear registration as professional workers, rendering them ineligible.

She urged the NRM secretariat to take immediate action to nullify the NRM workers’ representative election results or risk losing credibility, as agreed upon by the party principals.

In response to these allegations, Lira City’s NRM registrar, Thomas Okello, denied any malpractices during the recent structure elections, claiming that the entire process was free and fair.

Okello insisted that Sarah Awor did not win the village election, which was conducted professionally and in accordance with the party constitution. “It’s confusing why she would criticize district elections in which she was never a participant.”

He, however, refused to provide exclusive details regarding the criticism of the Lira City NRM party structure elections, requesting an official appointment to do so.
