Dokolo South MP aspirant Obura urges active participation in elections

Dokolo |An aspirant for Dokolo South MP seat has called upon the people of Dokolo and the nation at large to actively participate in the vital activities leading up to the general elections in 2026.

Richard Obura, who has expressed an interest in becoming a Member of Parliament, urged the electorate to participate in the upcoming national voters’ register updates, which will begin January 20, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of thorough preparation for the upcoming electoral process.

Obura stressed the importance of the voter registration initiative in promoting a credible, transparent, and equitable election.

“A precise and reliable voters’ register is crucial for ensuring a fair electoral process,” he said, urging all eligible Ugandans to participate in this important activity as part of the electoral framework.

He mentioned that updating the voters’ register is a significant task that necessitates extensive public participation. “This is a critical element of the roadmap for credible elections, and we encourage all Ugandans to engage.”

He also urged Ugandans to follow the rules set forth by the Electoral Commission and the law in order to take part in the election process peacefully. “I ask that all Ugandans conduct themselves with mutual respect and in accordance with the law during these activities.”

“Our goal is to maintain unity, peace, and stability as we approach the general elections.”

As the elections for 2025-2026 approach, the Electoral Commission emphasizes the importance of holding a peaceful, lawful, and inclusive election process. This is critical to ensuring that every Ugandan can exercise their right to vote in an atmosphere of peace and respect.

Last year, the Commission announced a change in the timeline for updating the national voter register, which had previously been scheduled to take place between January 3 and January 24, 2025. The update will now begin on January 20, 2025, and continue until February 10, 2025.

Justice Simon Byabakama, chairperson of the Electoral Commission, explained that this delay was necessary to ensure that all logistical and administrative preparations were complete for a smooth and inclusive process.

“This adjustment allows us to confirm our readiness at all levels and to provide every eligible citizen with the chance to participate effectively,” Byabakama remarked.

The update will occur daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at specified update centers across the nation.

The goal of the exercise is to register Ugandan citizens who are at least eighteen years old and have not yet been added to the voter registration list.

Furthermore, it will help registered voters transfer to new polling stations, verify and update their information, and allow students who have recently turned 18 to register and be assigned polling stations in their parishes of residence or origin.
