Yona Wanjala leaves DPI executive seat after 10 years

The Defenders Protection Initiative (DPI) has a new Executive Director to replace Yona Wanjala, who has served for a decade.

Yona announced his departure and new role with the same organization on Thursday, stating, “It has been an incredible journey…”.

The outgoing Executive Director highlighted the significant progress made in promoting a safe environment for human rights defenders.

Taking over the leadership from him is Ms. Helen Namyalo Kimbugwe, a familiar face within the organization.

Yona has expressed confidence in Ms. Kimbugwe’s ability to guide DPI effectively.

“I will take on an advisory role at DPI for the next few months, in part to facilitate a smooth transition,” he said on Thursday in a statement.

He also extended gratitude to supporters of DPI over the past ten years, acknowledging their crucial role in the organization’s achievements.

“I kindly ask that you extend the same to Ms. Helen Namyalo Kimbugwe and the entire team at DPI as they continue this important work.”
